Why visit Križnica?
Because of it’s specific value in conserving biological diversity, this area has been listed in the ecological network of the Republic of Croatia (NATURA 2000).
NATURA 2000 in the Regional park Mura – Drava is an ecological network of the European Union which consists of areas important for the preservation of endangered species, types of habitats and significant areas for birds.
In 2011 the Goverment of the Republic of Croatia declared the regulation of the Regional park Mura – Drava which is spread across five counties: Međimurje, Varaždin, Koprivnica-Križevci, Virovitica-Podravina and Osijek- Baranja County.
The Mura-Drava Regional Park is rich in biological and landscape diversity, geological and cultural-traditional heritage. The role of protection is the opportunity for developing ecologically acceptable activities within local communities which encourage the development of eco tourism which increases the awareness of the need for protecting the natural values of the whole region.
The history of Križnica
Križnica’s history is associated with the Military frontier consisting of the village with the school and an agricultural tradition. The agricultural tradition still exists today with a high percentage of arable land which has significantly influenced on the appearance of Križnica (previously flooded woodland). Today it is recognised as a place to visit and enjoy and as a place of protecting natural values.
